It’s important to ask yourself these two questions before choosing the diploma that best fits you.

  1. What is your goal at the end of the diploma?
  2. Where do you see your strength and passion in?

With that in mind, let’s explore the apparel diplomas at TaF.tc

TaF.tc’s Diploma in Apparel Design and Product Development

Total Hours: 561 hours                                    Max: 14-students per intake

This diploma is for those who love to make their own apparels and see their design through the entire construction process. Everything you learn will be taught according to industry standards and womenswear. You will learn how to make all types of clothes from t-shirts, shorts, and blouses to shirts, skirts, and pants. And for your final module on developing ‘design collection’, you will get to create an ensemble of garments that is uniquely yours, as long as you work within the limited time. Our alumni’s have created everything from a bridal dress to evening gowns, jackets and just about anything you can imagine of.

"If you have the impression that by studying here at TaF.tc, you will learn a lot of illustrative design, you will be disappointed"

Our curriculum here focuses on imparting in-demand technical skills that prepare our graduates for a career in the Fashion industry. For example, instead of illustrating your designs, you will learn how to produce production sketches, and create digital sketches on Adobe Illustrator. Instead of copying paper patterns, you will actually draft paper patterns, draft, perform pattern alterations, and cut and sew the panels together. You will also learn how to operate an industrial lock-stitch, overlock, and cover-stitch machine.

In 2019, we added two modules to this diploma. The first is draping, which teaches how to create patterns via the process of positioning and pinning fabric on a dress form to develop the structure of garment design. The second is apply virtual fit evaluation, which uses Clo-3D software to create realistic virtual garments that look real. Every apparel we see on blog shops such as ASOS, Zalora, can be created on CLO-3D. What this means is you will not run the risk of manufacturing apparels that do not sell. Instead, you test your assumption on the saleability of your designs first before production.

Outcomes: fashion sales associate, pattern-maker, technical designer, fashion designer.

This diploma is for those who are keen to learn the business side of fashion. There will be two core domains taught; 1) Merchandising 2) Digital Marketing.

1) Merchandising

Merchandising focuses on the art and science of formulating a buying strategy, with a focus on consumers. It requires one to be analytical, and be able to create a balance between achieving the business goal of profitability and maximizing customer satisfaction. In the world of fast fashion today, the demand and pressure on the Fashion Industry are higher than ever. One needs to be knowledgable about fabric and apparel, have the ability to identify fashion demand, procure and sell fashion merchandise.

2) Digital Marketing:

In this diploma, you will learn digital marketing in the context of fashion. You will first understand what digital marketing is, and then explore Fashion case studies about how it has evolved today.

In TaF.tc, we believe that true learning comes from actually doing it

This advanced diploma is for those who want to challenge themselves by taking up the full-suite of both the apparel and business side of fashion. It combines both our TaF.tc’s Diplomas in Apparel Design & Fashion Business.

While you may take either diploma first, we recommend students to attempt TaFtc’s Diploma in Apparel Design first before proceeding to complete the remaining 9 modules in the TaFtc’s Diploma in Fashion Business.

If you look closely at the modules in our two diplomas, you will notice that the first 9 modules are the same. What this means is that if you have completed one diploma, you will only need to take 6–9 additional modules to complete the second diploma and be awarded TaFtc’s Advanced Diploma in Fashion Technology.

The 9 modules shared across both diplomas builds the foundation of your understanding of the Textile and Fashion industry. In the first module, you will find yourself plunged into the world of fabrics. Each student will receive 50–60 fabric samples to identify and analyze their properties. In the second and third modules, you will experience the entire industrial process of pattern drafting, cutting, sewing and finishing. At the end of both modules, you will walk home with your very own industrial (M-sized) t-shirt and shorts made with the industrial sewing machines. In the fourth and fifth modules, you will sketch production sketches and learn Adobe Illustrator to sketch digitally. In the sixth and seventh modules, you will learn how to differentiate the good quality garments from the bad, and learn how a Fashion business is managed. Lastly, in the eighth and ninth modules, you will learn how to strategically plan seasonal budgets, and design a mood board for your target audience.

Throughout your 4-months with us, you will understand the entire process of how a garment is made. From its infant stages of technical design to selection of fabrics, dying, cutting, sewing and finishing.

To sum it up..

"This diploma is not for everybody"

Our diploma is structured to be highly intensive because we do not want to waste people’s time. Second, we want to simulate the intensity of working in a fashion company so that students get a taste of what it is like and are better prepared for their next posting. Lastly, we want to harness the creative confidence in our students that they don’t even know they have.

If the above scare you, we want to leave you with this quote:

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well. Chase your dreams.”

Do not be afraid to ask us questions! Taking the Fashion Diploma is a huge commitment and we want to make sure we see you through your entire journey.

If you are not familiar with our approach here at TaF.tc, our goal is to help prospective students make informed decisions about fashion in general and provide them with as many learning resources as possible to review first before taking the leap.
